When is it time to settle down? Many women wonder about this when it comes to their boyfriends, and you might be one of them. It’s easy to think that since you’ve gone steady with him long enough, he should start talking about getting married soon. But “long enough” is relative, and a few weeks may seem like a few years (and vice-versa) to different women. How do you know when it’s the right time to talk to him about commitment?

Actually, it doesn’t actually matter much to a man how much you’ve spent time together. Time doesn’t have a bearing on when he decides to get serious with you. This is precisely why a lot of women get frustrated with the men in their lives, especially when they keep waiting for the day when he goes down on one knee and proposes.

This is also the reason why a lot of otherwise good relationships end abruptly - women sometimes keep talking to their boyfriends about settling down. While they think that it’s okay to try to “convince” their men to think about commitment more often, all it really does is put unnecessary pressure on him. What happens next?

Instead of thinking about the relationship, he starts thinking about all that unnecessary pressure and how unpleasant it is. Even without meaning to, he tries to get away from the pressure by becoming emotionally unavailable in the relationship. And the more the woman tries to talk about settling down, the more he wants to get away. Eventually they both get so frustrated with each other that they break up.

Don’t shoot yourself in the foot by trying to pressure him into committing. You’ll need to remember that you can’t really beg, plead, or convince a guy to commit - it’s a decision he has to make himself.

But then again, that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it. If you want to change him, you’ll need to change yourself first - for the better, of course. Try to be encouraging, independent, and fun to be with - in other words, be someone he’d like to hang out with for the rest of his life. This is the best way to turn the relationship in a direction you’d like it to take.

So remember - don’t drive him away by putting any unnecessary pressure into his life. Just be the best you can be for yourself and for him, and the commitment will come in its own time.
